Purpose & Organization
The principal role of the Zoning Board of Adjustment (ZBA) is to review applications for zoning variances, special exceptions, equitable waiver of dimensional requirements and hearing appeals from the decisions made by administration officials. Further, the ZBA provides a “constitutional safety valve” for the town’s administration of its zoning ordinance and the necessary flexibility to insure that the ordinance was applied equitably to all property.

The Board is comprised of five (5) full-time members and three (3) alternates. Member’s terms are for three years and are appointed by the Board of Selectmen. The Board of Adjustment meets upon request on the second and fourth Tuesdays of the month at 7:30 pm in the Town Municipal Center. Please contact the Town Planner or Zoning Enforcement Officer for information on and the procedure for submitting applications.  Meeting notices are posted in the Library and Town Offices and published in the Portsmouth Herald a minimum of 10 days prior to each meeting.  The public is welcome and encouraged to attend all meetings.
