The Town of Stratham recognizes the importance of solar power as a renewable energy source and tool to help reduce both greenhouse gas emissions and energy costs. In that vein, the Town permits private property owners to install solar energy facilities on their properties by right subject to certain requirements. The Energy Commission is also working to retrofit town-owned properties to include solar energy systems.
“At the Local Clean Energy Solutions Conference in Manchester, New Hampshire on September 25, 2025 representatives from multiple local governments gathered to celebrate a national recognition: six municipalities earned SolSmart designation for solar readiness. Working with Clean Energy New Hampshire and the SolSmart program, these municipalities are reducing costs, removing barriers, and increasing access to the cheapest source of energy in the U.S., solar power.”
The Town of Stratham has received the SolSmart Silver Designation for its Planning and Zoning regulations. This designation indicates that our regulations are designed to enhance opportunities and establish a vision for the community’s clean energy future. Additionally, the zoning codes will offer clear and transparent guidelines for the development and use of solar energy. Special thanks to the hard work of the Stratham Energy Committee and the Department of Planning and Building for obtaining this designation!
Solar on your property
The Town of Stratham provides opportunities for private property owners to install both roof-mounted and ground-mounted solar energy facilities. In some cases, ground-mounted solar energy facilities may require the submission of a Conditional Use Permit to be reviewed and approved by the Stratham Planning Board.
Solar on Town-owned properties
The Energy Commission is currently working with the Select Board to formally acquire the rooftop solar facilities located on the Police Station rooftop. The solar facilities were installed in 2019 as part of power purchase agreement with ReVision Energy. The Energy Commission is currently evaluating the feasibility of locating solar facilities at other town-owned properties including the DPW facilities located on Bunker Hill Avenue or at the Stratham Transfer Station/former landfill property located off of Union Road.
