Reminder about 1st and 2nd Tax Bills

Taxpayers are reminded that two tax bills are issued each year.

The total tax you owe for the year is determined by multiplying the 2024 tax rate by your current property assessment divided by 1,000.

  1. Your first tax bill (usually due July 1st) is a prepayment of your total tax burden for the year; it is an amount equal to one-half of the previous year’s taxes using the previous year’s rate.
  2. Your final tax bill (usually due in December) covers the entire tax year and is calculated by taking your current assessment/1,000 times the tax rate minus what you pre-paid on the first bill.

2024 note: Due to the nature of increases in appropriations from year to year, the second tax bill captures any overall increase in taxes due as well as any change in your assessment.  The fact that both of these changes are accounted for in the second bill contributes to a higher than anticipated increase from bill to bill, but likely not compared year to year.
