NEW ELECTRIC RATES - UPDATE FROM THE ENERGY COMMISSION

Starting August 1, residents will see new electric rates on the Supply portion of their Unitil bills.  The default electric supplier for Stratham is the Community Power Coalition of NH (CPCNH), a nonprofit Joint Powers Agency operating to lower energy costs through competition and innovation.  This appears as “Stratham Community Power” on participating customer bills.  Stratham saw lower electric rates in the first year of membership relative to the utility basic service, but the Unitil energy supply rate was lower than CPCNH on 2/1/2025, and will be lower than CPCNH again for a period of 8/1/2025 - 1/31/2026.  Please visit the Stratham Energy Commission web page for more details on this initiative, and to review your options in pursuing alternative electric rates.  Any resident or business can remain with CPCNH, return to Unitil for electric service, or contract with a qualified third party.

NEW RECHARGEABLE BATTERY DISPOSAL BAN - EFFECTIVE JULY 1

To improve safety and waste management, Governor Sununu has signed a new law into effect (RSA 149-M:27) that bans the disposal of rechargeable batteries in regular waste streams.  This law will took effect on July 1, 2025 and aims to prevent fires caused by improper battery disposal, reduce disposal costs, and protect the health and safety of waste management workers.  Lithium-ion batteries are used in a variety of products, including electric toys, automotive vehicles, electric bikes and scooters, lawncare equipment, portable electronics such as cell phones, laptops, tablets, cameras, wireless headphones, speakers, toothbrushes and other rechargeable electronic devices.  More information about this change can be found here.

Use the Call2Recycle Locator Tool to find a convenient battery recycling location near you and spread the word!  Residents should contact the NHDES Household Hazardous Waste Program via email at hhw@des.nh.gov or by phone at (603) 271-2047.
