What Is a Mechanical Ventilator?
A mechanical ventilator (often called a “vent”) provides controlled, precise breathing support for patients experiencing respiratory distress. It allows our crews to deliver critical treatments such as:
-
CPAP – A first-line breathing treatment that can be used by all provider levels
-
BiPAP – A more advanced breathing treatment provided by paramedics
These treatments can often stabilize patients and prevent the need for intubation (placing a breathing tube). While these treatments were previously available, a ventilator allows them to be delivered with significantly greater control, consistency, and safety.
If a patient does require intubation, a ventilator is a major improvement over manual hand ventilation, which is physically demanding, less consistent, and carries a higher risk of patient injury. A ventilator provides safer, more reliable breathing support during transport and extended care.
Advancing Emergency Care
A mechanical ventilator strengthens our ability to treat serious breathing emergencies. It provides a level of respiratory support consistent with the care delivered by hospital respiratory therapy departments and represents a significant upgrade in how we care for patients experiencing severe breathing problems.
This equipment improves care for patients suffering from respiratory failure, trauma, drowning, and other critical emergencies, while also increasing overall safety for our community.
Why This Matters for Advanced Care
A mechanical ventilator is required equipment for approval to perform Rapid Sequence Intubation (RSI). RSI is an advanced airway procedure used when patients are critically ill and unable to protect or maintain their airway. In some cases, RSI can mean the difference between life and death.
Stratham Fire paramedics already bring extensive experience in RSI and advanced airway management through prior training and professional experience. The addition of this ventilator allows them to operate at the full scope of their training, improving patient outcomes and enhancing safety for Stratham and surrounding communities.
Providing a Greater Level of Care
The Stratham Volunteer Fire Department Association has generously donated one mechanical ventilator to Stratham Fire Department Operations using funds raised through community events such as the First Responders Golf Tournament.
The purchase of a second ventilator will allow both department ambulances to be equipped with this critical device, ensuring a higher level of care for Stratham residents and those in surrounding communities.
