septic smartNATIONAL SEPTIC SMART WEEK
September 18th through September 22nd is National Septic Smart Week.  Just because something says its “flushable” doesn’t necessarily mean it’s safe for your septic system.  Only toilet paper and human waste should be flushed down your toilet.  Watch a quick tip video here:  Don't Overload Your Commode! - YouTube.

Did you know that the placement of trees and shrubs on your lawn can affect your septic system?  Watch a quick tip video on trees and septic system construction here:  Shield Your Field! - YouTube.

Getting your septic system pumped doesn’t just help to keep it functioning properly.  It also helps your community stay safe by keeping waste water out of local waterbodies.  Learn more here.

historical society buildingPRESERVATION OF STRATHAM HISTORICAL SOCIETY BUILDING
If you have driven by the Stratham Historical Society recently, you may have noticed ladders, scaffolding and workers skilled in historic preservation.  This unique building, often seen as the face of Stratham, opened as Stratham’s first dedicated library building in 1912.  In 1990 the George A. and Emma B. Wiggin Memorial Library was turned over to the care of the Stratham Historical Society.  In 1993, the stone building assumed its rightful place on the National Register of Historic Places.  Enthusiastically supported by the Wiggin Memorial Library Trustees and Town of Stratham, the Stratham Historical Society has begun a three-year plan to assure that the building continues to be regarded as a historic jewel.

drew bedardYear one focuses on making certain that the building is water-tight with repairs to windows, chimneys, roofing, other masonry and gutters.  A $7,500 grant from the New Hampshire Preservation Alliance in cooperation with The 1772 Foundation and matching funds raised from various sources by the Stratham Historical Society have enabled the first-year budget.  Years two and three will focused on important but less urgent structural and cosmetic needs.

All of the sensitive work on the building is being led by Stratham’s own Drew Bedard of Hall & Parlor Historic Preservation.  Drew is an experienced preservationist whose skills and superior knowledge of historic code compliance are helping us to effectively respect the building that was generously bequeathed to us over 100 years ago.  Phase 1 of the project is expected to be completed in time for the Stratham Historical Society’s November 14 Open House.
