SPECIAL TOWN MEETING RECAP

On Thursday, October 26th, the residents of Stratham voted (unanimous voice vote!) to adopt the Stratham Community Power Plan, prepared by members of our Energy Commission.  This plan will reduce electric supply rates and save the residents of Stratham money.  We thank the Energy Commission for its dedication and the tremendous amount of work they've put into shepherding this initiative.  In the background, we will be working with the Community Power Coalition of New Hampshire to prepare a launch of this program in 2024.  We look forward to keeping you updated through this newsletter.

SPECIAL VETERANS DAY EVENT
Saturday, November 11 at 1:00 pm
Join us for this special Veterans Day event:  “A Survivor’s Story.”  Up until his death in December 2004, Gerald C. McLees (World War II veteran) was one of the last living survivors of the USS Squalus, which sank on May 23, 1939 during sea trials off the coast of Portsmouth, trapping 33 survivors in 243 feet of water off the Isle of Shoals.  The miraculous rescue of these survivors with the McCann Rescue Chamber has become a legendary example of the United States Navy’s teamwork and ingenuity.  In addition to the McLees’ presentation, there will be a short subject video called, “The Model Maker” about a Naval Shipyard employee making a replica of the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard commissioned nuclear powered submarine, USS Maine, in his basement.

gluckertHISTORY OF THE PORTSMOUTH NAVAL SHIPYARD
Monday, November 13 at 7:00 pm in the Morgera Room, Stratham Firehouse
In keeping with the tradition of military-themed programs around Veteran's Day, the Stratham Historical Society and Wiggin Memorial Library are co-sponsoring a program given by Joseph Gluckert, Historian and Museum Director at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard.  The Shipyard dates back to 1800 and has built and repaired ships from the days of wooden sailing vessels right up through the nuclear era.  During wartime and for many decades, the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard was a vital employer of Stratham residents.

This program is free and open to the public.

STRATHAM HISTORICAL SOCIETY OPEN HOUSE
Tuesday, November 14th from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pmhistorical society open house
You're invited, and you're invited to bring friends, neighbors and particularly Stratham residents.  The Stratham Historical Society will open its historic doors to the public to share a peek at the Society's inner workings including its library, museum, collections and some of the local historians who proudly volunteer at the Society.  It's surprising how many people drive by the familiar 1912 stone building daily, but have never ventured inside.  This is your chance to become more familiar with an important Stratham structure that proudly sits on the National Register of Historic Places.  Location: 158 Portsmouth Avenue corner of Winnicutt Road, Stratham
